Antonio Abellan was born in Cartegena, Spain, in 1964.
Throughout his artistic life Antonio has chosen a variety of topics on which to concentrate: the city is a recurring theme, people’s private lives, their customs, pleasures and desires. With a Fine Art degree form the San Carlos Faculty in Valencia, Spain, he has exhibited widely across Europe. This is the first time his work has been made available to a British audience.
“There’s nobody like Antonio Abellán for exploring the weaknesses and passions of the human condition – from both a positive and negative viewpoint. Using bright colours, integrated paper collage and a transparent final coat, he creates provocative characters overflowing with sensuality, eroticism, mischief and a good deal of romanticism. In his compositions, his characters are depicted as dancers: tip-toeing through ambiguous situations. He paints personal relationships, loneliness and the search for social status. These are all enhanced with his own take on the situations – perhaps he’s showing us a sly smile, forgiveness or understanding. Whatever he thinks of his characters, it’s a treat to be allowed into his world.”
