In the world of fine art, JOHANNES VON STUMM needs little introduction. A Past President of the Royal Society of Sculptors, President of the Oxford Art Society and Founding Member of Sculpture Network Europe, von Stumm’s career has spanned 30 years and he has exhibited widely throughout the UK and Europe.

Gallery Different is delighted to present his first London solo exhibition for over 5 years and will show a wide range of Von Stumm’s recent and new work over 2 floors of their Fitzrovia Gallery.

Those familiar with his work will recognise the complex combinations of materials, shapes and textures. The intertwining and interlocking elements of stone, bronze, steel, glass and wood fuse the strong with the fragile, the solid with the liquid, the smooth with the rough. The interplay between the elements is captivating. The inspiration for his work came from a visit to Paris at the age of 18. He was deeply moved by the soulfulness and beauty of Rodin’s sculpture. He began to experiment and at first figuratively with clay and then with combinations of glass, stone and steel. For many years he was told that this was impossible – the challenge was irresistible. After 3 years of breaking glass, he finally developed a way to join these opposing forces in an inseparable unity – a form in which inter-dependent pieces hold each other upright.

Immateriality focuses on Von Stumm’s enduring fascination with the transitory effects of light and the challenge of transforming this into solid sculpture. As the title suggests, the exhibition will focus on this element of Von Stumm’s work. Whilst evident throughout his sculpture – it is perhaps best demonstrated in his Immaterial Figures – a development These seemingly abstract sculptures use negative space and light to suggest their figurative subject matter. The Buddha figure in Contemplation; the classic relationship of Mother and Child, the dialogue in Couple in Conversation and the supplicant in The Offering – all use the void to be filled with the whole creation - oscillating between dark and light.
