Throughout his career Denis Bowen retained a commitment to the spirit of experimental art. The works released by his estate for this current exhibition span over 40 years of his career. The earliest painting on exhibition was painted in 1963 and is a seminal piece. Triptych for a Venusian has elements of his early tachiste work as well as the later planetary pieces and demonstrates the way in which he handled paint, stretching its properties to the limit. Paintings from the mid to late 1980’s show his preoccupation with volcanic elements and the effects of planets and atmospheres and his experimentation with flourescent colours. We have in the exhibition the last remaining ‘black light’ painting, Silver Diamond. The exhibition also features smaller works on paper from the Hiroshige Series and two of his limited edition prints. This is the first major solo exhibition of his work. The exhibition will be travelling to the wonderful Dean Clough Galleries in the new year.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire important works from one of the most widely respected abstract painters of the 20th Century.
